@primohomme I see what you mean, but I always thought her comfort range was around D3 to D5. Would that be more of an alto or contralto's range. The same thing goes for Toni Braxton. They both have deep voices or dark timbres. That was another why I think that they are contraltos because their tones are darker than most. I don't understand why people would say that Mariah is a contralto because her timbre is too light to be considered one.

Yes, but being able to sing in a certain range does not make a voice other than what it is
I mean, I can sing soprano high notes but that does not make me a soprano
The same way that a mezzo singing contralto or singing soprano doesn't make it anything other than a mezzo...Unless the mezzo can actually encompass at least 3 octaves and alternate soprano and contralto range with complete ease and agility across the entire voice. In that case the mezzo would be an Assoluta.

@primohomme They are perfect examples of that androgynous kind of sound, but Alicia has always been refered as a contralto because she sings in a contralto tessitura or comfort range. Toni Braxton is another example too, especially when you hear how deep her lower register is.

A true contralto has a much darker voice, in fact, a manly sound in the low chest range
Think Cher, Annie Lennox, etc

@primohomme Do you consider Alicia as a contralto or a mezzo soprano. At the very beginning of her career, I thought she was more of a mezzo soprano because her voice was little brighter and she had more ease while belting. watch?v=pLKWlBWZLgY Here her notes were much clearer and in tune. Ever since her voice darkened, she struggled a bit with higher belts. I think now she's a full contralto.

Totally different voices, Nana was a lyric soprano and Alicia is more of a mezzo/alto

@primohomme I know it's been a long time since my response to this, but I was wondering if you were compasring their sound. I've listened to more of NaNa and she has this very ethereal quality in her voice. Do they they have the same voice type?
-
why did she rarely use her head voice? her head voice is so exotic, haunting (i always like the haunting sound) and ethereal, honestly..so good

Nana sounds much better in recordings from the 60's and 70's, in the mid 80's her voice lost quality (she was born with one vocal fold longer than the other, so that gave her a strange raspy timbre) this is one recording of her I particularly like:

@primohomme I was listening to Nana Muskoursi and her voice is hauntingly beautiful. I like her operatic like Roman-Catholic style of Amazing Grace, she sings it so beautifully. Love the texture of her voice.
Wow Alicia can hit some really high notes! I'm used to the sexy deep voice but in any range shes phenomenal. A great talent, great artist and just great person all around. A true virtuoso of music and she always gives us the definite pure artist experience. Truly a musical genius. Wow rare footage u say well thank u so much for sharing. I love Alicia. Much love to her and all the fans that support her.
