The Coming Ice Age: Be Scared - Be Very Scared

I was going through the voluminous archives of The Apologetics Group and stumbled across this video, broadcast in May of 1978 on the TV show "In Search Of..." Entitled "The Coming Ice Age," all manner of experts and climate scientists were trotted out to warn the world of the run-away global cooling that was just around the corner.

It's too bad that the original host, Rod Serling, had died and been replaced by Leonard Nimoy. The Twilight Zone vibe would have better suited the content of this episode -- as well as Al Gore's remake of the same theme.

That's how sequels normally are: not as good as the original but more laden with bombast and special effects.

Sorry but all this is 100 percent faulty forcasting. According to Christian Scriptures (book of Rev.) the days of the near future are described as days inwhich people wll suffer from the scourching heat of the sun not the frost-bitten days of an ice age!

You may differ in opinions about the christian bible but its track record for accurate forecasting of future events is impecable :)

Just examine all that has bee fortold and then came to pass so far, 100%

Important upload! It was the American MEDIA hyping cooling in the 70s, NOT scientists. It is the American MEDIA who are STILL pushing cooling and anti-science. The media are not about science, knowledge, truth, or apparently even self-preservation. They just like to hear a good squabble, and they'll manufacture one if needs be. Hence the plethora of climate sceptic one-liners that are making the rounds, in this age of the sound-bite.

President Obama made the largest investment in alternative energies like Wind, Solar, Bio-fuels, etc., as well as investments for research & development into battery technology. What sucks is the Republicans are trying every trick in the book to stop those investments! To me there is only one way to vote in November. Obama 2012!! Not only is it smart for the environment but it will create untold number of jobs here in the US! MUST BEAT CHINA!

@doomdayjudge VERY GOOD QUESTION! The reason nothing has been done is due to LOBBYIST! Obama just signed new CAFE Standards for autos 35mpg by 2016 & that took a huge fight! However, that is NOTHING compared to the fight against the Fossil Fuel Industry when it comes to reducing CO2! I know it sounds like I or the scientist are being "alarmist" but the truth is things will get very bad by mid Century if nothing is done! 54 people on avg die each yr from tornadoes last yr 550 died!

@Viracocha711 I'm not taking the Fossil Fuel Industry's side - because that lot is nothing but bad news. I just want to see the truth whatever the truth may be. I want to use sustainable fuels, but nobody is willing to go there. "In 10 - 15 years" is all I've heard from the automotive industry for the past 40 years. If the greenhouse problem is so precarious, why are not the authorities taking action? Why do they allow the car industry to keep churning out gas guzzlers? I wonder.

The only scientist getting rich are the HANDFUL working for the FF Industry! Yes,the focus is CO2 because CO2 IS THE PROBLEM!! Of course there are other gases & those too have come under fire but it is no shock to me that you would think otherwise! @Viracocha711 I'm not changing topic, I'm merely saying that science isn't always right. They have made blunders in the past, and they still are. You must always look at where the money comes from. If for some reason you want to get rid of mineral fuel, CO2 is the only thing you can attack without going back to the dark ages. There are so many gases more potent than CO2 that are abundantly used that are not being touched. Google climategases and see for yourself.

If you are trying to say scientist are lying about Anthropogenic Climate Change then you are basically saying 10s of thousands of scientist are in on the biggest conspiracy in the world. @Viracocha711 During the 19th and early 20th century "scientists" devised the so called "race biology" to please their masters, and for centuries they postulated the existence of the ether - a medium in which the stars and planets were suspended and that facilitated the transfer of energy between them. To blindly trust science is not to be enlightened - it's being gullible. Science is no better than the raw data that it has at its disposal. Lying and being mistaken is not the same

@doomdayjudge Simply looking at avergaes over time does not tell you anything about climate...Especially about climate today. You need to dig in & find out what causes the climate to change in the past & what is causing the climate to change now. The science behind Anthropogenic Climate Change is very clear & very solid. One either has to willingly play dumb & deny the science or one has to make the absurd claim that scientist are lying. What is not convincing??

@Viracocha711 I HAVE read up on the subject, and I'm not convinced. What I see is a normal development in the climate. The average global temp during the entire lifespan of the Earth so far is 17 degrees C, the current global temp is about 13 degrees. During long periodes of time we have had temps over 20 degrees C - and THAT was in pre- human times. And just so that we are clear on it: I heat my house using wood pellets, I don't fly and I have a low consumtion of goods.

This video was simply a typical example of the media overblowing the facts in the 70s. There was not a single peer reviewed paper in the 70s warning of a coming ice age, NOT ONE! There was however, MANY peer reviewed papers predicting global warming due to CO2! The science behind Anthropogenic Climate Change is crystal clear! "According to SOME Climatologist"...This video is an example of the media blowing something out of proportions for ratings! There were 5 or more Peer Reviewed Papers warning of Global Warming in the 70s for every one simply suggesting cooling...NONE were warning of a coming ice age, NONE! There was NEVER the CONSENSUS or the massive amount of EVIDENCE for cooling that there is now for Anthropogenic Climate Change! But FACTS are not important to DENIERS!
