Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today held a press conference at his office in Hartford to discuss a bill he will introduce to curb excessive overdraft fees. When account holders overdraw on their accounts, they are often slapped with fees of upwards of $30. Banks so-called overdraft protection programs enable customers to overdraw their accounts, without their knowledge, when they use checks, electronic transfers, debit card purchases, and ATM withdrawals. Until recently, some banks had policies that allowed them to charge customers up to ten times per day for overdrawing on their accounts.
