Joanna Newsom - Emily (Somerset House, July 08)

Having spent the previous week listening almost exclusively to 'Ys', I was delighted when Joanna performed Emily as the second song of her set. This is, of course, just a small portion of the song (The full version is 12 minutes, and there's no way my camera's battery would have held out for that long), but I hope it illustrates how enchanting she was.

Quality isn't amazing, but I remastered it to the best of my ability.

That song was amazing, I wanted her to play Sawdust & Diamonds aswell but apparently thats the one she forgot all the lyrics to at Latitude so she must have been too scared. Also thats a really good angle, on the videos I posted peoples heads kept getting in the way, are you really tall or something? :)

Yeah, Sawdust & Diamonds would have also been lovely. And no, I'm of average height! My friend and I were in the disabled area at the back, though, so I had a clear shot over everyone's head. We were pretty far from the stage, but my camera's got a decent zoom on it.

It was amazing, wasn't it? I was really holding out for Monkey & Bear, but Emily more than made up for the lack thereof.

I had a tear in my eye towards the end of her set...

I can't think of any words to describe the beauty of most of it, though Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie at the end was a definate highlight.

The band before were awful though, as were the people stood next to me talking throughout most of the performance...!

My legs nearly gave way when she started playing it. It was just wonderful. I was hoping for Only Skin. Although Emily is my favourite song, there are parts of Only Skin that are completely heartbreaking. Oh, and En Gallop. That would've been cool to hear.
