Kay Jamison reads from her book "The Unquiet Mind." She is one of my personal heros, - she has had biplolar from youth and (despite or because of that) is also one of the foremost experts on this disorder. She is a professor and author of several textbooks but also a number of very readable "normal" books, such as this one.

  • as for meds or no meds, i think every person is different. i'm on lithium and antidepressants. a friend of mine was on even more stuff but then found out by accident that he could regulate his bipolar by having unpasteurized goats milk every day. :) whatever works.

the whole thing about spatial/logic deficits and psychosis sounds very interesting. i'm gonna look into that. and i agree you can learn LOTS from looking at how the mind works/deviates. my hobby horse literature is full of it too.

  • Well, I have bipolar myself and I don't use meds.. There also seems to be a specific IQ pattern in certain areas, I've noticed people that lack in the Spatial & Logic areas are more likely to experience manic episodes that include psychosis 0_o There's quite a lot you can learn by studying mental 'illnesses' along with things like post-traumatic stress etc. I believe mental conditions are the genetic key to evolution in intelligence =D

    (this is only an opinion)

  • lol. ok then. that's settled. btw way i am not a baddie. in case you haven't noticed this is a dialogue. trialogue maybe. i just felt that telling people if they can't fix it the way you say, it's their own fault, and what else, well i think it may not be the wisest piece of advice. when you cross the line to advice that is potentially dangerous i will delete those comments. i have no problem with that. and since you have no time for debate, i expect no reply. :) good luck with your book.

  • I am not really worried about views, I don't even actively promote my vids. If you want to impart censorship and thought control, I can't argue with you or stop you. I really don't have time for debating with you I have finish my bipolar recovery book and get it done this fall, the book is far more important than any video or comment

  • now, your last sentence there almost got your comment deleted. it's a slap in the face of a lot of people. but i am sure you are aware of that. this comment is so your style, - it's not about an interesting option to look into, it is an ultimate truth and whoever doesn't accept it is making a scene with "voluntary" manic episodes. maybe you would get more viewers / people to actually consider the ideas you are promoting if you worked on that. keep smiling.

  • actually, xxzanexx, i don't think it's as simple as euphorias and lows. on one hand i agree with you that it is preferable to manage things without meds, on the other hand i know that sometimes there are instances where this is not (or not yet) possible, and in other instances it just doesn't work.

  • then I think you will enjoy a video I just made today Zanexx. It is a video lecture about how to permanently beat manic episodes, safely, naturally and without any drugs at all. Once you understand how to control your own mind and cognitions, every manic episode after that is 100% voluntary.

  • well.. that's what bipolar is. Euphoric high, manic & the depressive low.. medication is used to force balance, puts that person's average into a smaller range of emotion. I'm saying, it's harder to control on your own without meds, but if you can then it becomes an asset rather than a liability you constantly need to be treated for

  • Lithium saved my life. It is allowing me to raise two children as a single mother. I thought I didn't need meds and guess what...I ended in hospital with my children in foster care. It must be true because lithium did wonders for me!The only drugs that scare me are addictive like clonazapam, ativan, vallium etc. There is no one perfect answer. My way works for me.Yeah lithium!
