WJAR 10 in Providence, Rhode Island reporting on 105.1 WWLI's switch to holiday music today (Monday, November 16, 2009) on their 11:00 PM newscast. Patrice Wood reports that "...from now until Christmas, that's all you'll hear. [Lite Rock 105] started it about five years ago and got such a good response from listeners; they decided to make it an annual event". At the end of the report, a "Question of the Day" poll reveals that 78% of the people who voted on turnto10.com stated that they feel it is "too early for radio stations to be playing holiday music".
I believe it is too early to begin Christmas (sorry, "holiday") music now. The day after Thanksgiving is most appropriate. However, for the past decade, it has become a standard practice to for stations nationwide to begin doing so up to a month before Thanksgiving. I can only hope that it will trend back toward Thanksgiving again in years ahead.
