The Onda Portable Microwave Oven by Matthew Schwartz of the USA is one of eight finalists in the 2011 edition of Electrolux Design Lab. The winner will be announced 7th September 2011.

The Onda Portable Microwave oven is a very clever twist on an appliance that was first introduced to homes in 1955. Pre-prepared meals are placed in compatible food packages and warmed with microwaves. Specifically, the Onda is slid on to the packaging and the aluminum contained within the interior of the handheld device creates a circuit connection when the seal of the packaging is broken. Paper batteries are used to produce energy, making the Onda both smart and eco-friendly. The Onda also comes in a range of different colors for personal preference.

  • Yes, more prepackaged, who the hell knows whats in it crap. Thats all our bodies need! If we have a future thats void of any real, grow/raise your own food, then we are a sad race. Techonology is great, but come on. Are we really going to be that lazy in the future that we need all these "future" devices???? Pretty soon we will be like all the humans on the movie Wall-E.

  • i wanat one of those! but are they throw-aways or what? Well they be expensive? Will supermarkets stock up on pre-packaged foods for this Onda-thing?

    OCTOBER 2011.
