Program notes for the big percussion concert WILDFIRE which was held at the Malmö Opera House, March 16th 2010.
A SPARKLING PERCUSSION CONCERT
It all started with a sparkle in the Music Library at the Malmö Opera. Magnus Johansson and Benjamin Staern work here daily who also happens to be composers. They contacted the Percussion Ensemble from the Malmö Opera, and planted the idea of making a slightly chamber concert. Enthusiasm from the involved now made the fire to spread and the flames got stronger and stronger. More composers got attached to the project, which gave the fire more fuel. It is now all realized into a sparkling and euphoric percussion concert held at the Malmö Opera House big stage with 5 works of which three of them are world-premiered.
WILDFIRE
Wildfire is a new version of a previous work by Monrad called Zavanna for six percussionists, now reduced for two players.
Wildfire describes a journey through the percussion instruments multiple sound possibilities which takes the listener to the great African Savannah from early morning when the wildlife slowly awakens to a roaring wildfire which fuels their stampede. Then the merciful rain puts out the fire. The piece captures the struggle between beauty and cruelty.
