Archaeologist & Historian James Balme has been searching a new area of an ancient settlement in Cheshire that he discovered over 10 years ago. The latest area has produced many treasures reflecting Romano-Celtic religious activity with the deposit of Republican Roman silver coinage and jewellery as well as many exciting Bronze artefacts all pointing to a possible shrine area where religious offering were being made.
But it is the large stone carving, over 2 feet in length that James found lying at the bottom of the River Bollin that sparked off the mystery and a trail that was to lead James to uncover evidence of a possible religious use of the site. Following months of research James has identified the carving as a Romano-Celtic River God that was carved and placed into the river as an offering to the gods, a common practise during the 1st & 2nd centuries.
