What happened was that George Clooney boycotted "Hard Copy" and its sister show "Entertainment Tonight" in 1996, around the time "Access Hollywood" debuted. Barry Nolan and Terry Murphy left in 1998 and were replaced by some guy.
Low ratings ended HC's run in 1999, and Clooney ended his boycott.
