Recorded on the Warclouds server - I'm in the process of executing a boom&zoom style attack on an Me-109 below me. After firing a short burst (and missing) I pull back up to prepare my next attack. I look back and nearly suffer a stroke when I find another Me-109 just a few hundred yards behind me, doing its absolute best to eat up my initial altitude advantage and catch my zoom climb. Yep, once again my poor situational awareness has gotten me in trouble. Still, since I'm only on a partial load of gas (about 40% left at that point), I figure my Lightning might just be light enough to give me a chance to dogfight my way out of this situation. This video shows the fight that follows, as seen from the perspective of the second Me-109.

Although it was a really fun fight and I definitely very much enjoyed it, things again end badly for me, but see for yourself. Anyway, a fat SALUTE to JG101-Antmano, my opponent in this encounter.

Please excuse my total lack of video editing expertise, especially the foul-up where I switch views from the Me-109 to my P-38 and then back to the Me-109.

  • what game is that

  • @52outbound The game is called "Il-2 1946".

  • I took a closer look, that is not Bf-109K, look closely at the tail landing gear, it's not retractable, is it a G10?

  • @HMSBeagle200 You may be right ... I seem to recall that his ride was listed as a 109K in the online score page, but my memory may be failing me. 109s all look the same to me anyway. :)

  • @52outbound To be exact its called il-2 Sturmovik 1946

  • what game is this?

  • @pauliej93 It's strengths are high alt performance, over all fast speed, and centralized firepower in the nose for easy aiming. But don't be under any illusions, on the western front you are asking for trouble expecting it to dogfight with German single seaters. Try to limit yourself to boom and zooming, and run if you get into trouble. The P-38 dominates in the Pacific theater, however, because it is MUCH faster than all of the Japanese fighters, with only the Ki-84 able to compete.

  • @HMSBeagle200 That is 100 percent absolutely a Bf-109G-10. You are correct. You can tell because this 109 doesn't have a retractable tail wheel, and does not have the wheel well doors. That's how you could tell historically, but in the game, you can tell because the default winter paint scheme of the G-10 is that full white scheme. The default K-4 winter scheme has a green splinter pattern with white lightly sprayed over it, with the green showing through in patches.

  • opps D-model used DM600, sorry. G-2 and Fs looks very alike, the main visible difference is the canopy, the forward side window was canceled. the most produced G-6 is famous for its bulges, which is similar to G-14 (14 being the result of an attempt to stream line the production of various form of G-6). In G-10 the bulges were stream lined but retain the non-retractable tail landing gear (long), can't be sure if the wing bulges which accommodate the widen landing gear appeared on Ks is shared

  • Not necessarily, under close examination even sub variant of G-model can be differentiated, model A~D were produced with Jumo engines which has a large chin radiator, while the E-model is much more stream line with DB601 engine, E-3 and E-4 are the more numerous member of Emil, which can be tell apart by the wing armament, and metal bracing of the canopy. While F2 and F4 looks virtually the same which I can't tell them apart, in a dog fight the only clue would be "why am I still alive"
