Campaigners joined Concern Worldwide in Brick Lane to remind world leaders that promises to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and help the billions living in extreme poverty must be kept. Every day in the developing world 24,000 people die from hunger and 100 million children are denied the chance to go to school. The crowds in Brick Lane were calling for immediate action to tackle these injustices.
At 1pm Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, read the STAND UP pledge and the assembled crowds stood up for 1 minute in support of the Millennium Development Goals. In keeping with the STAND UP theme campaigners were also treated to an afternoon of cutting edge stand up comedy from some of the UK's brightest new comic talents.
Sadiq Khan can raise the issue of global poverty with influential people such as Tony Blair. He can raise the same issues with his constituents and raise the profile of the Millennium Development campaign.
