Known Robert for many years. He got out of the "ninja" crap LONG ago because of the BS stereotypes etc. Train with the guy, spar with him, whatever, make your own conclusions. I will say this. He influenced a lot of people, MMA fighters included. Guys like Jeremy Horn (a high ranking black belt of his), Tony Blauer and so on.
Just my opinion, he was, is, a good guy and made attempts to teach realism of combat as opposed to tradition.
Ok, solid jab cross basics, stance and execution are debatetable. Strange though that after all those decades Ninjas have finally managed to reach the level of Boxing beginner. Wow, could have had that already a long time ago. Instead Hayes, Hatsumi, Bussey and crackpots like Ashida Kim sold their bs of Iga and Koga Ninja death hand scroll to the gullible.
I trained with Mr Bussey in '86-'87 in Omaha and with his top guy Steve Jennum. I was 16-17 yrs old. It was a great experience, so hands-on and rough. Most martial artists just weren't training that way back then. They did low kicks, grappling, even pulled hair in sparring, a lot of fun!
In 1992 I began training Gracie jiu-jitsu and earned my Blackbelt from Rigan Machado in 2005.
I'm happy and think back with gratitude for the time I spent at RBWI so many years ago, he was ahead of his time.
Not that it matters, but i dont care for the lean back evade, i feel the three four and five punch on a committed attack would start to swarm and overwhelm. That is not to say that Mr. Bussey isnt well away of that and there is more to his concept after the initial phase is learned. I favor the "low combat stance" it provides a little extra cover for the ribs while securing balance. I wish he had a up to date series out, i like Bussey.
Mr Bussey is a incredible guy. I'd love to see him come out w/ more material. Or do a seminar/workshop out here in SoCal.
