Scott Brothers Duo perform Après un rêve (After a Dream) OP.7 No.1 by Gabriel Urbain FAURÉ (1845-1924) in an arrangement for Harmonium & Piano by Jonathan Scott. This track is taken from their new CD "Duos for Harmonium & Piano" http://www.scottbrothersduo.com
The mustel harmonium used in this recording is by Victor Mustel, Paris, 1880.
Programme note:
In 1877, Fauré became engaged to Marianne Viardot, but this romance was short lived, and she ended the engagement abruptly. Fauré never really recovered from this rejection, and it was this event, combined with Faurés apparent lack of musical success, that led to bouts of depression. It was during this time that he composed the song Après un rêve for voice and piano. This short romance is a setting of an anonymous Italian poem adapted by Romain Bussine (1830-1899) and the text describes a dream in which the author and his beloved are brought together in a blissful unearthly meeting. However, as the title and melancholy style of the music suggest, it is the waking from this vision, and the painful realisation of the narrators true heart-rending circumstances, which give this work its unique poignant beauty.
Après un rêve - After a dream
In a slumber which held your image spellbound
I dreamt of happiness, passionate mirage,
Your eyes were softer, your voice pure and clear,
You shone like a sky lit up by the dawn;
You called me and I left the earth
To run away with you towards the light,
The skies opened their clouds for us,
Unknown splendours, divine flashes glimpsed,
Alas! Alas! sad awakening from these dreams
I call you, O night, give me back your lies,
Return, return, radiant one,
Return, O mysterious night!
Congratulations sirs, for this touching interpretation and arrangement. I would like to know if it is possible to have a copy of this extraordinary arrangement. Is it available for purchase? Thank you in advance, and greetings from sunny Brazil. I am a big fan of all your videos, I have watched each of them dozens of times...
