The overarching theme on Apocalypse seems clear, but the chapters in this story are kind of vague, making it difficult for me to really get into this album.
As usual, the instrumentation behind Callahan's deadpan vocals is simple and honest. It serves mostly as a stage for his poetic musings about Drovers, a self-sunk boat, a marriage gone sour, and American values.
Though I wouldn't say anything on this LP is offensively bad, it's definitely not my favorite Callahan album. Enjoyed a few tracks, but not much more.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why so? What should I review next, eh?
6/10

I don't claim to understand this album. I've been putting it on when I paint. I put it on the repeat and I just love it. Riding for the feeling is just an amazing song (to me). It drifts and plods and then comes into focus with a surge. I feel like I get it.

This is the kind of songwriter who gives great care to his craft and this is the kind of album that takes great care to appreciate. The initial struggle can result in a strong connection, what good does it do you not to challenge you? Meet him half way and the boon will be plentiful.

I find it really easy to relate to the new Bill Callahan CD. And I'd give it a 9-10. I don't think that people are writing this sort of stuff everywhere with this amount of skill. But I think it does require a few listens and a look at the lyric sheet to fully apreciate it.

@konradharla that is such a tough question...but I have to say Sometimes I wish we were an Eagle. Rococo Zephyr and Jim Cain are just brilliant.
