If he likes to buy and hold he should invest in long term bonds but with long term bonds the par value of the stock is at risk if the interest rate changes. Just depends on what company you go with. Yeah I know a little something as well but I can't see myself constantly watching stock lol not worth my time although the money can be good.....eh I'll pass. I like gold anyway lol 10 onces strong and growing and holding and growing some more untill.....
