I've heard of people eating squirrel - although not as a 'popular dish', but fried baby squirrels? Never heard of that.

I didn't say all rural folks do....but it's common.

My grandmother and great-grandmother did.

yes people all over southern U.S. do eat squirrels, rabbitts, deer, gator, and many more animals that I would not eat, also various types of turtles.
