The diameter of a hula hoop depends on height/weight/waist and experience; the bigger you are, the bigger the hoop; an experienced hooper or one who hooped as a kid could measure from floor to belly button or an inch or so above, the novice should measure from floor to between 2 inches above belly button and mid-chest; the expert usually aims for an inch or so below the belly button though particular dance moves may require a large hoop. Big/heavy (up to 2 - 3 lbs.) is easier.
