Dr Mahathir Mohamed talks to Stephen Sackur 1/3
--------------------------------------------
During his term in office, Dr Mahathir turned Malaysia into a regional high-tech manufacturing, financial, and telecommunications hub through his economic policies based on corporate nationalism, known as the various "Malaysia Plans" which set out the government middle-term objectives. These policies with strong Keynesian tendency remained in effect almost to the end of his tenure in office.
Dr Mahathir is credited with spearheading the phenomenal growth of the Malaysian economy, now one of the largest in South East Asia.

Growth between 1988 and 1997 averaged over ten percent and living standards rose twentyfold, with poverty relatively almost eradicated and social indicators such as literacy levels and infant mortality rates becoming almost on par with developed countries.

During this period, Dr Mahathir embarked on various large scale national projects, such as the North-South Expressway, Multimedia Super Corridor, the planned capital city of Putrajaya, Johor's Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the Bakun Dam in Sarawak, and the Petronas Twin Towers.

During the Asian financial crisis of 1997, IMF had prescribed a recovery package for Malaysia, but Dr Mahathir defied international pressure, his then rejecting the package. Though economic prosperity has been mixed since then, Mahathir argued that Malaysia's recovery was relatively faster and better, as compared to many other Asian countries affected. After the financial crisis, the IMF and World Bank acknowledged that Dr Mahathir's approach had worked.

Mana untung kita? Timbanglah sendiri.

  • I hope this is not another reseacrh activity to determine his que at the Iraqi/Egypt/Libya shoes.Where special laws are create at ground of like and dislike at the suffer largely on nation.

  • I well understood his perception. Even in the case of Anuar Ibrahim - Mahathir didnt kill him! although he can if he want to, in some political practice like what happen in other countries we know with just blue solution....u know what I mean!Instead,Anuar Ibrahim was only set aside temporarily as he turns to be a blockage to the success path at that point of time for the best of Malaysia which may cause big losses on crucial investments.

  • Bravo Mahathir you are productive in achieving Msia dvlpmt at such a short 20 yrs period. So much dvlpmts to count on comparing to his imperfections.

  • @YangBenar100 R u expecting an angelic value 100pct from leaders? Perspective pts alway clash fm one to anther. One decent ideology access differently by another. as long as more than half of nation are happy than the imperfections shud look into for only better remedial ways not eliminating way or signifyg leader and branded them bad.

  • @apunisheriii ada baca sejarah tempatan dgn teliti?

  • @4rcher91 I am 54 yrs old. I was a trained senior police officer. I am trained in interrogation. I have a working knowledge of body language. The possibility of you being right is there. The probability of my being right is there too. I have met upfront and he has an excellent command of English. I dare say much better than his mother tongue.

  • "no we are not because his answers are well said... go back to where u belong...

Sia - Asia... The Asian people who are bless to share what is in Malaysia today...if you don't like it...you are honored to leave...stop complaining and start be grateful" by noraekin82

  • @rpremkumar1958 He wasn't avoiding the issues being asked. Probably he had something to say in mind and wanted to convert it into English words. If he would speak in Bahasa Malaysia, I'm sure he could directly make out his real point.
