In this video, each cube is a robotic module that recognizes and connects to its neighbor. Using an computer interface, a user can sculpt the structure into any shape. The structure then disassembles itself into the desired shape by disconnecting and discarding the unneeded cubes.

This is research conducted by the Distributed Robotics Lab in MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). For more info:

  • Interesting video

  • @DrCOMPUT3R Large quantities of these cubes could be created in a huge block with a machine, smaller cubes could be designed, the cubes could be made to "permanently" fuse together after the unwanted ones are released, and extra cubes could be reused.

Imagine scanning a sculpture for its dimensions, sending the information to the program, and using it to get a suspended eight foot tall block of half a millimeter wide cubes to fall apart until they are in the shape of the statue.
