  • The range of compressors from 1/4 H.P. to 1/2 H.P. hold 600cc of refrigerant oil. What I do is add 200cc of re-claimed 3GS oil.A number of refrigeration air conditioning companies change the oil on central cooling systems once a year. The oil removed used sit around the yard until a waste oil company visited to take it.

But, people have written about using other oils in the compressors.Fact is, refrigerant oils are "de-hydrated".Moisture in a refrigeration system is a big problem.

  • I remember reading somewhere about vacuum functions; where a photon strikes a particle, which produces a chain reaction that results in the photon being shot back through time to start the reaction. (Or something like that)

I'm sorry. That is one use of a vacuum pump that is a little "out of my league".

I thought the 30 inches of vacuum measurement we use in refrigeration would also apply to the height a full vacuum would lift a column of water.

It will in fact lift to 6 meters.

  • The only thing I would add to what has been said is to put a container in series with the suction line to "trap" any condense from the chamber. The rest is pretty much common sense.Try and use the original starting relay and klixon[bi-metal circuit breaker] to start it.The very small domestic fridge compressors are still capable of pulling a full vacuum if the flappers are OK.Follow the instructions for doing an oil change.

  • If by "He" you are refering to Romaurie, the perpetrator of this item, That's me, sunshine!

And I've had 6 of these up and running with routine maintenance for 4 years.

The engineers in England who built and used these in 1973 when I joined the proffesion had no trouble with them,Remember, refrigerant pressures are greater than air.You have a constant flow of air through the comp to help cooling. If you are in a very humid enviroment, then maybe a pre-filter would help.

  • A few good quality small vacuum pumps have come on the market now. However, I have noticed a number of engineers using them with little or no oil. When I mentioned this to one engineer he said it only made 20 inches vacuum from new.He should have returned the pump to the dealer after first changing the oil and re-testing.These commercial vacuum pumps have a window for monitoring the oil level.

I change the oil regularly on my old CAE 4440 Hermetique compressor and get 30 inches full vacuum.

  • It rather depends on the condition of the compressor you use.The hermetique comps have thin flapper valves that if run very hot or without oil loose their ability to seal 100%.I use a refrigeration low pressure guage which shows up to 30 inches of vacuum. If it will pull 25 inches in 15 seconds, its in reasonable shape.Always change the oil first.

  • All of us knows that any fridge or HVAC compressor has oil and this oil must return in the device (compressor) for a continued lubricating. But, in the case of a DIY vacuum pump using an air compressor using fridge or HVAC compressors, what we should do with? We know that fridge or HVAC compressors have a myriad of advantages to use it in DIY projects! So, I have to build a vacuum pump with such compressors... Which the best thing to do? Thanks!

  • @ncbookz as long as there's oil in the compressor it should be fine.

  • Yeah, but is it strong enough to suck the photons out of a 'perfect' vacuum?

  • hi

im looking for a cheap vac pump to go on a chamber that i have made would this work also do i have to do anything to the pump or can i just use it as it is

    barry

  • how can he run a compressor with no refrigerant i was told that the air will mess them up moisture and air in the interior would ruin them? was i lied to? anyone answer this please
