  • @lucianoestivill - that's a good point Luciano ! Often pure skill (and Prost had plenty of it) sometimes needs a daring attitude to fully shine ! Of course ...why taking risks on one wet race..one upon a dozen still to go !I know his brain was revving as fast as his engines :):):)

No doubt about Alain's immense talent,

but on the wet a very special feeling rules

between driver and car : we had average

drivers which could outclass the top ones on the wet. Can't still guess why !

  • We can see him pushing that button at 0,45 entering the straight to the Ascari -

1,01 entering the straight to Parabolica -

    1,17entering the main straight -

I'd go for him setting the g.box in ultrafast

    autom. downshifting mode.

    Just an attempt,of course.......

  • SENNA THE BEST !!

  • Da notare la pulizia di guida con una macchina che era un camion.Senza offesa per i camion.Sublime Alain

  • Una buena época.

  • and williams were regarded as having the best overal package.

also during the season fuel was a high talking point, shell elf and agip had -very- potent formulas and according to offical reports, a tank full of agip was rumoured to cost "as much as a small car" and the elf fuel smelling like "an old pair of boots"

no cars took part in a grand prix or qualifying in 1991 with active suspension.

williams decided to use it for 1992 as a 'throw everything they had ' tactic to the opposition

  • in regards to active suspension, ferrari williams and mclaren had all "dabled" in tests with it,

by this stage of the season in 1991 (monza) the technical scope of formula one looked like this:

ferraris engine and gearbox systems were unreliable, and challenge wise any technical inovation they were regarded as a write-off, the 643 noted as being fw-14 styled.

Mclaren were running in practice and tests a semi automatic gearbox, and variable intake trumpets that worried renault alot,

  • it definatly seems gearbox related, when he presses it his left hand does not flick the padels, and the downchange sounds incredibly faster. why he doesnt just leave it semi-automatic could be for reliability reasons and to give him more control/freedom in less bunched corners.

  • Is that so Gianca: Clark, Stewart, Fangio and Prost had the same philosophy on how to face racing. But there's something I don't agree: Clark, Stewart or Fangio were a bit more daring overall, yes, but I don't think They were faster than Prost in the wet. The "slow" driving by Prost (from 82 German GP on) was more a matter of not to take risks rather than a lack of skill. Skilled and fast as He was, his wet track driving was just a matter of not feeling that kind of risk was necessary....

  • We also have to take into account that Prost was so gently on his driving, that He often drove almost without touching the brakes, and on some occasions, WITHOUT even touching brakes, not even for a fraction of a second, a very rare or peculiar way to be fluid and fast at the same time..... So I'm pretty sure that if He had the possibility to take some advantage from transmission to diminish speed, He'd for sure exploit that possibility at its very best!!!

  • Correct Gianca, you're rigth!!!. With or without totally automatic up or down shifting, your explanation fits with some kind of different gearbox set ups, as I tried to explain without any ceirtanty, and fits even better with mallamoozoo's 4th possibility!!!
