Channel Nine news reader Brian Naylor reports on the Melbourne Bushfires on the 21st of January 1997 which burnt over 400 hectares through much of the Dandenong Ranges and the Mornington Peninsula, precipitated by 40+ degree dry heat and strong northerly winds.
Sadly 12 years later on the 7th of February 2009, Brian Naylor himself and his wife, Moiree, were killed as one of the Black Saturday bushfires destroyed their property in Kinglake West.
Brian Naylor was an Australian television presenter, best known for his longstanding stint as chief newsreader at Channel Nine Melbourne from 1978 to 1998 and his sign-off line, "May your news be good news, and good-night."
Remember that day well that first footage is of devils elbow we evacuated through there maybe 40 mins before that footage was taken, we prob would have had to turn back if we evacuated late, thats all it takes get out early people!

3 people that died in these fires. A close friend of mine lost their 2 best friends that day. They will never be forgotten. I was working in Dandenong that day and had to go via Monbulk to get back to Olinda, I spent the night in the dark watching the cfa trucks going up and down the Tourist rd. Thank goodness that the cfa men got the Upper Ferntree Gully fire under control in 2009.

Brian Naylor. A legend. The only newsreader on Australian television who had a song created just for him. Rest in peace.

Interesting and sad that 11 years later, Brian Naylor himself was killed in Victoria's 2009 bushfire disaster.
