Women have been fighting for years to attain pay parity in the workforce, but employer discrimination and legal loopholes have prevented them from achieving that goal. On January 9, 2009, under the leadership of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the House of Representatives opened its legislative session by passing two critical bills that demonstrate the incoming Congress' dedication to equality and justice, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act.

  • I also think someone should be paid according to how WELL they do the job... could it be possible that through the eyes of the employers that Men might be carrying out the jobs better? Just a thought... don't get mad lol!

  • I think women should definitely get paid equal to men, I think everyone should get paid the same for any one job... but I'm afraid politicians are gonna try to pass a law that increases all womens pay by X percent... which won't even almost fix the problem.

  • Consider that there are more male CEOs since mostly men are willing to put in the time to get to that job. Once there it is a total overpay for usually someone not worth the money. Those huge fees hike up the over pool of money men make and only a few men make that much money.

  • If firms really paid women .70 cents to the $1 for men then why wouldn't firms have just hired women?? Reality check: paying for the same work is a manipulation of facts. Lumping together everyone and dividing by two genders does not show reality which is men working the more dangerous jobs (95%+ of all workplace deaths are male), men work longer hours per week, and men do not take off time to raise kids and have a family.

  • I support equal pay for equal work

    Good Luck

  • Dear RepMikeHonda,

The facts and the opinions you present make sense, but I feel that the majority of the public don't feel as compassionate about this issue as you because honestly, we don't understand or believe it. I've heard this fact of women receiving 70 cents per $1 compared to a man's wage, but it just doesn't resonate without a specific example. If you supported your argument more on specific examples of women working the same job as men and earning less for it, instead of the tired...
