  • Let's get on with life! Oh wait, no, let's all get hung up over instrument classification!

  • His left hand is completely wrong and the right is only approximately correct. This was obviously only for the humorous value.

  • @PanamaCabana

Several kinds of flutes exist - the piccolo is one of 'em. Of course there are several important differences but still.

You're pretty much arguing that a half violin isn't a violin.

  • No, he's not holding it right. He could only play C# holding it like that. But that's okay because he's already cool enough. :)

  • a piccolo is indeed in the flute family. Just as the piccolo trumpet is a type of trumpet. C Flute, Alto Flute, Bass Flute, Contra Bass Flute, Piccolo.. etc. all in the flute family. Still, it doesn't make the video producers sound very informed when they call it only a flute.

  • I see your point. The flute that we know is called a 'C flute' as it is the middle ranged flute int he family.

  • For the record, a piccolo is a type of flute, a flute is a type of woodwind instrument (regardless of whether or not the flute is made from wood). A piccolo instrument is generally half the length of the standard and pitched an octave higher. In the case of flute, it's just called piccolo. In the case of trumpet, it is actually called a piccolo trumpet.

If you doubt this, you might consider consulting an orchestration text.

  • A piccolo is a piccolo; a flute is a flute. The piccolo and the flute belong to a set of related instruments, including the alto flute and the bass flute. All these are classified as woodwinds.

  • The flute is not only that one kind of flute but also a family of different kinds of flutes. The piccolo is one of the many kinds of flutes making it a flute, too. Your statement equals saying that Grieg was not a composer because J. S. Bach was.

  • First of all, yes that was a piccolo. And it looks like he was just blowing into the piccolo to make a certian noise effect. So he didn't need to hold it right. And no the piccolo is not a flute. A piccolo is a piccolo, a flute is a flute.
