We are not Hispanics: 2009 CHCI Conference

Last night I went to the Warner Theater and tried to speak to students of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, at the end of a Comedy show this organization presented as part of its 2009 conference.

I could only speak to three people -very sharp and educated folks- and this video is very interesting. They are an attorney from Colorado, a young Capitol Hill staffer, and a promising activist from NYC. I asked them three questions: * Why are we called Hispanics when we are Natives and Afro descendants? * Why are corrupted corporations sponsoring the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute 2009 Conference? * Will the Obama administration actually approve an Immigration Reform?

The only Hispanic nations in the world are Spain and Portugal. The countries in the Americas were Spanish is spoken are multiracial and multicultural. We speak hundreds of Native and African languages, besides Spanish and Portuguese or French.

The injustice, disparity and chaos you mention in those countries are a result of the racism promoted by the Hispanics over non-white populations, and here the U.S. government wants us to be one community! Oppressed and oppressors WTF.

Dear(6:23) Latina is just the female slang for Latino it all means Latin (aka white) in English ..Go back to your home countries and fill out a census you won't see latino /hispanic on any forms but you will see white, mestizo ,black Amerindian etc etc etc the problem here is in America they suddenly forget who they are and conform to the generic latino/hispanic label,the guy at 10:00 is a perfect example you almost had to put him in a chicken wing just for him to say he is mestizo!!

What the F### is this guy talking about Mexicans obviously celebrate their Indigenous heritage and also acknowledge are large Mestizo population. Mexico is so far ahead of the game compared to many others who don't. However some also have Spanish ancestry or Latino Heritage as well and may not have indigenous blood. Hernan Cortez himself had a realtionship with his interpreter who was indigenous and they had a Mestizo. Intermarriage between Spanish & Indigenous was encouraged & even promoted.
