Express sailing in 40 knots wind

20 or 40 kts is not important; it's really dangerous sail downwind with only mainsail. A Jib or a Genoa is the best and fastest solution in strong downwind offshore sailing: no uncontrolled gybe risk, no hard rudder, easy to depower and enpower sailing as well.

I guess that it was blowing a bit but 40 knots ?? Not really looks that way ;)

LOOK it clearly says 40 Knots of WIND!!!
-
@sbrian28 that's the Baltic sea I suppose, looks adequate enough to be 40kn, easy
-
Im saying 20 knots.. no way that is 40!
-
25 kts perhaps...
-
@multitalent8 that makes no sense to me. obviously there are sailboats in offshore races going into the 20 kts range. are the racers a planing hull? somehow people clearly make speeds far greater that 6.6kts.
-
no way in hell that is 40 kts, 40 kts in that boat with those rags up your eyes would be bleeding and you would spend most of your time on your side, perhaps 20 gusting 25, nice breeze....
-
@multitalent8 Turns out it's my mistake, he's in an elan express not an express 37- much smaller boat, and one i'm not familiar with, so you're probably right about his speed.
-
@drummerboy202 you may be right, but it seems a 26 ft Marieholm is overtaking this boat (0:52 behind; 1:17 in front). I know for a fact that a Marieholm will not plane and will therefore not exceed its theoretical hull speed (6 knts) by much.

@multitalent8 it looks like an express 37 to me, which would explain the title express sailing, and 37s are very fast boats- they can hit 12 knots surfing downwind in under 20 knots of breeze, and they're also very light, so extended planing especially in 40 kn of wind would not surprise me at all.

15 knots boat speed is impossible for a boat like that. I'm guessing this is a 30 ft boat. The water line will then be something like 25 ft (7.5 m). The theoretical max. hull speed would be 2.42*sqrt 7.5 = 6.6 knts. It could pick up some speed when surfing off a wave, but would never exceed 8 knots. Never.
According to SMHI the wind this day was up to 40 knots in this area. That was the obervations that day, not my own idea.
