Temples & Sculptures of Khajuraho. ( खजुराहो ) Full Screen.

Khajuraho, a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, located in Chhatarpur District, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic sculpture.
The Khajuraho temples do not contain sexual or erotic art inside the temple or near the deities; however, some external carvings bear erotic art. Also, some of the temples that have two layers of walls have small erotic carvings on the outside of the inner wall. There are many interpretations of the erotic carvings. They portray that, for seeing the deity, one must leave his or her sexual desires outside the temple. They also show that divinity, such as the deities of the temples, is pure like the atmaa, which is not affected by sexual desires and other characteristics of the physical body.
The Khajuraho temples are made of sandstone. The builders didn't use mortar: the stones were put together with mortise and tenon joints and they were held in place by gravity. This form of construction requires very precise joints. The columns and architraves were built with megaliths that weighed up to 20 tons.

The temples are grouped into three geographical divisions: western, eastern and southern.
Only as many as 10% carvings contain sexual themes, not between any
deities but between ordinary humans. The rest depict the common man's life of those days.
For example ladies applying makeup, musicians, potters, Farmers etc.
All these are away from Temple deities. They give the message that one should always have God as the central point in one's life even though one is engaged in worldly activities.
The temples were built under the late Chandela kings between 950 and 1050 AD.

Amazing photos. It is surprising that the images have suffered so little at the hands of iconoclasts, vandals and the harsh weather over one thousand years. By the way, what is the background music? Sounds like more than two instruments are involved, so may be it is not a Jugalbandhi.

It is excellent photography. The background music "JUGALBANDI" is fantastically suited the video.Some photos are shown "Pan and Zoom" & I feel it is not so important. Actually the introductory note is good. To add to the philosophical and devotional aspect, this type of pictures are shown in public places as one of the method of sexual education to youngsters, as the elders were shy to educate the new generation unlike the present day electronic or print media.

Hats off the sculptures.
