Grumpy Jii-san's been watching cartoons for way too long. I can't recall when Halloween became a month-long affair, with decorations going up weeks in advance. But, who am I to stop d' horror? Let's look at an old horror that just gets more morrible so with age.

This time, the narration was recorded at the top of Arizona's Four peaks mountains, from which one can see the Phoenix smog.

You can find a transcript of these remarks here:

  • Probably my favorite anime movie of those I have seen, and I have seen a lot. The fact that Amano did the designs for the movie is hard to believe, considering that the detail I have seen in a lot of his artwork is so intricate and elaborate. However, this is one of the first anime I saw, so it's normal to say that it will always have a place in my favorites. On another note, the novels are strangely addicting, kinda like a Tarantino movie!

  • People seem to blow hot or cold on this one. I know a lot of people, especially long-time fans (and whoisyouranime), really like this movie. OTOH, some authors include it among anime to avoid. I liked it much more back in the 80s, but despite the nostalgia, it just hasn't held up for me.

  • So what would be a horror anime that you would recommend for here and now, or should I expect that in your next review? ; )

  • I'm not a big fan of horror, especially as defined these days as slasher flicks. I've previously covered a couple of horror titles I liked: Red Garden, Vampire Princess Miyu (the OVA!) and 3x3 Eyes.

I also liked the first couple of episodes of "When they Cry" and "Hell Girl", though both series quickly became repetitive and thus boring.

  • The anime that made me get into anime in the 1st place. It's my No. 1 favourite anime of all time. 3 stars?! Well, guess we can't all be fans of this movie. Hideyuki Kikuchi, the creator of VHD, was heavily inspired by old Hammer Horror Films. His biggest inspiration came from Horrors of Dracula with Christopher Lee playing Dracula. Thats why the villain here is called Count Lee. Kikuchi was so scared of the film, he uses 2 chopsticks as a cross & puts it next to his bed.

  • Yeah, I knew it was your favorite from your top 10 list awhile back. I thought more highly of it 20 years ago, but when I rewatched it last month, it just seemed flat and uninteresting.

  • @GrumpyJiisan I have to watch this, but I have seen Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

    100% ANIMATED ART.

It's so immersive/detailed/unique, it's almost sinful. DO NOT let this keep you from the 2nd installment!

  • Amazing Movie. Keep posting.

  • The soundtrack actually invokes images of storming castles and a strange world. I'd have to disagree with you on the BGM, it was one of the first things that stood out of me when I watched this.

Infact, I'm listening to it right now.

  • Good review as always.

  • WHO'S AWESOME? YOU'RE AWESOME.

  • Are you going to re-watch whisper of the heart, kiki and ocean waves? Those movies never get old. Kind of cute family -friendly anime.

  • D HORROR!!! D HORROR!!!! Greatness.

  • My friend gave me the first three novels as an x-mas present last year. She said she got bored with it.
