http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2009/07/22/dorgan-anti-trade/ 07/16/2009: In a speech on the Senate floor, Sen. Byron Dorgan expressed his strong opposition to the establishment of a carbon market, sharply criticizing the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act, saying the bill would "find very little favor from me" if it were brought to a Senate vote.

Transcript: Those in the senate who are working very hard and talking about the issue of climate change and how we might want to cap carbon and what kind after low-carbon future we might be able to do should understand at least there are some of us -- and I certainly speak only for myself -- who believe that cap-and-trade -- quote, unquote around the "trade" -- makes no sense to me. I dont think we ought to embrace cap-and-trade, I think we ought to embrace a cap with different approaches.

And so, Mr. President, I will have more to say on this, but I wanted to explain at least as those who are writing this bill and attempting to take that which was produced in the house with 400-and-some pages on cap-and-trade, I want them to understand that some of us will resist very aggressively the "trade" side of "cap-and-trade."

  • Well, describing excess CO2 as only beneficial is not correct, it causes acidification of the soil and oceans. Plants do not like excess CO2 and acidic pH..

  • IS the GOV's Renewable energy GREEN? How much goes 2Corp's again? Stop corp consumerism &NWO agenda controlling Congress. Fix the problems locally in our communities. Stop the Fed GOV from nickeling & diming US at e/turn w/no benefit to the shrinking middle class. If the BILL isn't RIGHT, don't PUSH it thru.

  • Carbon dioxide causes temperatures to rise--carbon is a greenhouse gas. This is proven by absorption spectroscopy, which I've done myself.

Warming increases CO2 levels, as per Henry's Law. CO2 is less soluble at higher temperatures, so the ocean (biggest CO2) sink will emit CO2 at higher temperatures, creating a 'lag' effect.

  • Why is congress full of morons? Carbon doesnt cause temps to rise, temps rising causes more carbon. plain and simple. carbon is good for the environment, what do you think all the little green things on earth breathe?
