Clarins and its ongoing passion for plants

Following the death of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, founder of Alp Action, Clarins wanted to continue its commitment to conservation causes and so created the ClarinsMen Environment Award.

The ClarinsMen Environment Award is given to men who devotes their energy to saving our planet and work toward the preservation of plants.

The ClarinsMen range embodies Clarins unrivalled expertise and knowledge of plants and their active properties. For Clarins, using high quality plant extracts obtained via methods which preserve the environment and respect the local population, is a top priority.

In 2004, under the patronage of the celebrated French botanist Jean-Marie Pelt, Clarins decided to give the award to the ethnopharmacologist Jean-Pierre Nicolas and his association "Jardins du Monde".

Portrait of Jean-Pierre Nicolas

Jean-Pierre Nicolas is a passionate individual who devotes his time to developing this cross-disciplinary science which uses different areas of expertise from diverse fields - anthropology, sociology, botany, chemistry, pharmacology - and follows an ethic based on the respect of local populations and cultures.

In 1997, in the garden of the Abbaye de Daoulas situated in the Finistère region of France, he created the largest garden of medicinal plants in the country which is home to over 240 species. He also developed a network of botanical gardens in the west of France and worked on new "Jardins du Monde" projects across the world.

The "Jardins du Monde" association offers deprived populations an alternative to conventional medicines and treatments which are not available locally or only at a prohibitive cost.

"Save plants to save people: the local natural heritage of local communities is incredibly rich in natural plant resources which represent, on a botanical level, immense therapeutic potential which we are working hard to study, scientifically validate and make available for the benefit of the people." Jean-Pierre Nicolas

« The association aims to ensure that the people are autonomous in the way they manage their primary health care and veterinary care. Thats why we are communities. Jean-Pierre Nicolas

Over the last few years, the innovative approach of Jardins du Monde has gradually won international recognition and is now starting in other continents (in Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Tibet and Chile).
