  • It's not a "tanker car", it's a grain hopper or grain car.

  • @tallmanwsor You're a dumbass, it's a cylindrical hopper used for either grain, sand or powdered chemicals. Tank cars are more round and don't have the dump things on the bottom. There is a hopper though that looks like a tanker, it's a presurized cylindrical hopper but it looks alot like a tank car.

  • @bricub72 Yes, you did say that. But others have insisted here that they could tell it was a "grain" car and I was basically responding to that.

You have it right though. And while I'm not a railfan, I extend the same 'salute'.

  • @NorfolkSouthernModel You can't go by car color at all. Car color is the perogative of the owner and not assigned to a product or service. I've seen grain shipped in every color imaginable. In particular the Farmrail fleet that had a different color for every car.

  • @Boss302fan I said it was a "hopper" car, which carries many different types of dry loads (Grain included) Happy Railfanning guys.

  • @Boss302fan Ahh, you're right. I can only say that due to it's off-brown color, it would be a grain car. Potash hoppers are orange and have this one company's logo (which ironically is named "potash!") and cn cement hoppers are a maroon color. But yes, you're right, it could be potash or cement.

  • @bricub72 I am not a 'true railfan'. You have me there. Instead of railroads being a hobby to me, they are instead a means of earning a living. i have worked in the railroad industry since I was 18. I have been an engineer, conductor, trainman, road foreman, yard master, train master and supt. My point is, how can you tell it is a 'grain' car? As i said above, I know it is not a tank car. but how do you know it is a "grain" car?

  • @Boss302fan true railfans know that this is a "hopper" car, NOT a Tank car

  • @NorfolkSouthernModel Oh, I agree it is not a "tank car". Even though many tank cars come in colords other than black, white or blue. What I am asking is how can you tell, from this angle, that this car is carrying "grain". How can you tell it is not carrying potash, fertilizer etc. Many, many products are carried in this type of hopper. Not just grain.

  • @Boss302fan Because grain cars have end platforms with ladders all the way to the top, while tank cars are black, white, or blue, and are rounded at the ends. The only ladder is in the center of the car, which goes to the dome on top. This is a 4-bay cylindrical grain hopper.

  • @gtw4918 How can you tell from this angle that the car is a "grain" car?
