I think Ektara is different. This is called
Ravanhasta I believe.

I just got back from Rajasthan and this instrument was everywhere, has a great sound - except i heard the name as something like "ramon tal" - have looked this up, but can't find anything close - any ideas?

This instrument is called an Ektara (lit.: one string) and is a very simple instrument to learn and play.
