Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that functions as a pro-hormone to assist with increasing the flow of calcium into the bloodstream and it is also necessary for bone growth and bone remodeling. Vitamin D is naturally produced by the human body when exposed to direct sunlight. Vitamin D can also be found in eggs, fish and fish oils. Since vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin it is highly recommended that you get your levels tested prior to beginning supplementation to make sure you are not taking inappropriate amounts in a supplement. We can make our own vitamin D when exposed to ultra-violet sun rays, but with the decrease in time spent outdoors and the increase in sunscreen, we may be at risk for mild vitamin D deficiency.
