He was recognized for portraying a Native American in Hollywood films, and he lived as a Native American as an adult. He and his wife Bertha, who was Native American, adopted several Native American children. In 1995 Cody was honored by the Native American community for his portrayals in films."

This is the short edition. The full version runs a minute. I don't really care about the "real" ethnicity of Iron Eyes Cody … the commercial makes its point effectively and eloquently.

The packaging people and the Waste Management Corp. perpetrated the myth of the litterbug. They turned the tables on us... They changed the laws to allow all this waste to exist at all ... so they can get rich on making it and disposing of it. Read Heather Rogers's The Hidden Life of Garbage. She documents the scam. Think about it.

@pinkstrawberrypuding I also remember it. I'm white, and all the litter we see (even today) can almost make me cry too. There seems to be a lingering belief that us whites care less about the land than indians do. I beg to differ
