Each Ìmólè posseses proper magics performed by elegun and manipulated in its respective awo (cult society). Pidan are magics which concerns Sàngó. Egungun & Igunnuko have their own magics for example as every spiritual energy worshipped has.
Did anybody understand this?? I mean the act, not the ceremony. It looked like Shango was cutting his eye out...by the reaction of the little kid and the mom on the front row, something nasty was going on in that person's face.
In my country trinidad,We sing a special song when Sango is performing "Pidan". He takes fire and touches everybodys head. Then he eats the fire, and it is amazing. He is the most popilar orisa in Trinidad
Is Shango the only Orisha who actively displays "pidan?" I remember seeing Shango mount an elegun at a wemilere (here in the states) and after he completed the possession he went into the throne, took his Otas from the batea, and swallowed them. Then later that night before Shango left the elegun, he regurgitated the otas and then put them back in the batea.
That was the only time I've seen such a display by an Orisha, but it was very impressive to say the least. :)
the priest possessed with sango during the festival performs feats of spectacle for the audience, called "pidan". sango loves to display his power, so when he possesses his priest he will use a combination of "sleight of hand" and real psycho-kinetic activity to amaze people and instill awe in his devotees. some things include cutting himself without bleeding, chewing hot embers, skewering his tongue with an iron rod, and even making rain fall and turning stones into children's snacks.
it looks like he's poking out one of his eyes.
