Midland Memorial Hospital Employee Arrested, Charged with Selling Hydrocodone

NewsWest 9 is still trying to sort out all the details, but one thing is for sure, one woman faces some pretty serious charges for selling hydrocodone, which is a pain killer.

DEA officers, Midland Police, Midland County Sheriff's Deputies and Homeland Security Officials were all on hand when 51-year-old Norma Jean Spencer was taken into custody around 11:00 on Thursday morning at Midland Memorial Hospital.

NewsWest Nine has learned, this is all part of an ongoing investigation.

DEA officials say, Spencer met with undercover officers, on two separate occasions, and sold them hydrocodone, once on April 23rd on hospital property, and again on May 28th at another location.

A third sale was supposed to take place on Thursday at Midland Memorial, but instead, she was arrested.

Spencer is charged with two counts of distribution of pharmaceuticals.

She faces from one to ten years in prison for the first count in April, because it happened within 1,000 feet of a school, as Saint Anne's is less than a block away from the hospital.

The second count could land her in prison for up to 5 years.

She is currently in federal custody, and there's no word on if bond has been set.

When Spencer appeared before a judge on Thursday afternoon, she said she was a hospital secretary.

Officials at Midland Memorial confirm she is an employee, but is not a nurse, and only nurses have access to prescription drugs.

Officials would not comment on where she got the drugs, since this is still on ongoing investigation.

Midland Memorial says they will be looking into their H.R. policy following the investigation to determine what will happen with Spencer's employment.
