Joined by city officials, Girl Scout Board Members, donors and other distinguished guests, the crowd watched with cameras poised as a bronze statue was unveiled. Named, A Promise To Keep, the bronze commissioned by Magic Empire Council and Little Brownie Bakers celebrates Muskogee as the city with the earliest recorded sale of cookies by a Girl Scout troop in US history where the Mistletoe Troop first used the sweet fundraising idea in 1917. The bronze statue was created by Stillwater artist Phyllis Mantik and will be on permanent display at the Three Rivers Museum. Also on current display are vintage Girl Scout uniforms, a photo of the Mistletoe Troop, and other Girl Scout memorabilia.

From GSUSA: The Girl Scout Cookie Program, the nations leading business and entrepreneurial training program for girls, is an enduring symbol of the energy and vitality of the Girl Scout Movement, said Kathy Cloninger, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of the USA. The program, now a beloved American institution, got its start in Muskogee, Oklahoma in December of 1917, when the girls of Mistletoe Troop took the initiative to bake and sell cookies for a service project in their high school cafeteria.
Were also very pleased that the statue, which depicts a Girl Scout in uniform with boxes of cookies at her side, will be unveiled when the Girl Scouts of the Magic Empire Council celebrates its realignment with Girl Scouts of Bluestem and Girl Scouts Tiak Council to form the Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma. Our thanks and congratulations to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma and the City of Muskogee for their deep and longstanding commitment to Girl Scouting. May A Promise to Keep, and the values she represents, stand forever.
