it is sad that mr. Lord parted with DP to do copies with dull orchestral intros.. it kind of looks awkward. maybe that's because mr. Gillan started to rule the band too much and mr. Lord didn't like the direction.

The version I know (confirmed by JL himself!) is Mr.Gillan wanted to be on the road (where he feels best) everyday, and Mr.Lord (over 60) would've preferred fewer, selected, top shows. And this is what happened. Big Ian is on the road with DP basically playing every night, whereas Jon has 2-5 shows per month the way he wished. So everyone's happy. ;-)) Except for you. ;-))
But I agree that Jon's personality is missing from DP even though Don Airey is one of the best solutions for replacing him.
