The Summerhill neighbourhood was named after a house that was built in the 1840's by a man named Charles Thompson. Charles had built his home and named it the 'Summer Hill' house.
Most of the Summerhill area was one time part of the Thompson Estate. The area was later divided to his heirs in the 1980's. During that time the neighbourhood of Summerhill went through very little expansion after the North Toronto Railway Station closed in 1931 but was again rejuvenated by the start of Summerhill Subway Station in 1965.
Summerhill is presently the area along Yonge Street running from Balmoral Avenue on it's north down to Belmont St. West between Avenue Rd. just east of Yonge St.
The area is known for trendy little restaurants, coffee shops and antique stores. Condos in the Summerhill area that are worth noting are 1 Balmoral, 2 Roxborough, The Ports, Thornwood and The Clairmont. 1 Balmoral has some nice townhouses, and a new cluster of town homes is just being completed on Birch.
