Aceh is at the northernmost point of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Even before it was hit by the tsunami in December last year, there was a state of emergency in this province. For 30 years the Free Aceh Movement- the GAM- had been waging an insurgency which was fiercely opposed by the Indonesian army. In August 2005, a Peace Agreement was signed with the mediation of former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari. The EU immediately sent inspectors out there. With their counterparts from ASEAN countries, they are 230 men in white on the spot, as part of the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM). Their job: to verify the implementation of measures mapped out in the Peace Agreement.
