Texas Health Resources 2009 Quality Conference Award Winner -- Patient Safety

Caregivers at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital won the Patient Safety Award on April 24 with "Reduction of Hospital-acquired Pressure Ulcers" at the 2009 Texas Health Resourcess Quality Conference.

The hospital created a Skin Wound Assessment Team (SWAT) to begin checking the skin of all patients for any potential problems. Every shift, the nurse assigned to a given patient performs a skin assessment. A brightly colored sticker noting any pressure ulcer present on admission (POA) goes on the patient's chart.

Within the first year, Texas Health Arlington Memorial realized a 63 percent decrease for in-patient pressure ulcers.
