Tutorial on how to use a Clamp Meter

Extech clamp-meters, also known as amp clamps, clamp-on amp meters, or amp probes, give users multimeter versatility, current measurement capabilities and specialized features tailored to your specific needs. Extech clamp meters are designed for AC, DC, and AC/DC environments. Extech multi-function clamps feature essential test tools built right in such as a non-contact voltage detector, single and dual thermocouple thermometers, and a patented, exclusive built-in IR thermometer. And for very low current readings, our mini clamp meters offer high resolution accuracy and smaller size for access into smaller areas. Compare our clamp meters today: no other test equipment manufacturer comes close to Extechs extensive selection of rugged, accurate, reliable and affordable clamp meters.

Also features the 480172: AC Line Splitter which allows clamp meter to measure AC Current on a 2-wire or 3-wire power cord.

  • You just want to test the positive, the problem shown in the video is clamp meters measure the magnetic field generated on the cable. The flow of electrons on the positive creates a corksrew effect field when it travels back in the neutral this effect is going the other way and in effect cancels the field out. so measuring both will equal 0.

  • So if you want to measure amperage you have to only clamp onto either the positive or negative and not both? Is that right?
