First belt test with sparring in it I came away with a bloody nose (thankfully not broken). The funny thing is, I wasn't aware I'd got hit there until the blood started to drip onto my gi.

I know. I never heard of that either but it's his advanced classes that do that. They also learn ground fighting techniques along with board breaks and patterns.
