I'POYI Aboriginal Writers' Gathering, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, March 26-27, 2009. This is the first part of Armand Garnet Ruffo's talk during the opening panel discussion on the state of Aboriginal writing in Canada. Armand Garnet Ruffo is an Ojibwe member of the Biscotasing branch of the Sagamok First Nation. He teaches at Carleton University in Ottawa, and is the author of Grey Owl: the Mystery of Archie Belaney (Coteau, 1997) and At Geronimo's Grave (Coteau, 2001), winner of the 2002 Archibald Lampman Award for Poetry. He has also published a collection of essays, (Ad)Dressing Our Words (2001), co-written the entry on Aboriginal literature for The Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2008), and a feature film production of his CBC award winning play, "A Windigo Tale." Ruffo's poetry has appeared in numerous anthologies.
