Episode 3 of the Channel Five series Kings & Queens, which looks at the life and reign of Edward I of England also known as "Longshanks".
The series looks at key monarchs in the history of England and gives some simplified facts about their reigns. This is a good series for those who have little prior knowledge of English history.
@ConstantineJoseph Edward Longshanks, by contrast, spent a great deal of time improving the way England was governed and administrated, and arguably had the largest impact on the English system of government until Oliver Cromwell. He was ruthless bastard formed into this by the Baron's dominance of his father and was highly competant soldier and general but he, unlike most people of the day, had no illutions of civalry having a place in war.

@ConstantineJoseph Richard I didn't spare one thought to the governing of England. He used England as his private bank and as a reserve of manpower to fund and to support his wars in the Holy Land and in France. Steven Runciman describes him best when he said: "he was a bad son, a bad husband and a bad king, but a gallant and splendid soldier." In terms of shaping England's future even John Lackland and the useless Edward II had more impact than Richard the Lionheart.

@bravesnipz Longshanks was about as devout a Christian as they came in those times. He had been on both the 8th and 9th Crusades and regularly worshiped in Christian temples to the Christian God. He recognized the Pope as the ultimate authority on Earth as every good Catholic did and sought the Pope's blessings in his deeds. There was nothing Pagan about him.
