My father in law owns a jump rope factory right here in Nagoya. In the fall of 2010, NHK recorded the following feature. There are English subtitles made by me & Chikako. Click the arrow on the bottom right of the video and you can turn on subtitles.

  • The subtitles you're seeing started happened about 15 years ago. A few shows added giant subs for punchlines of for comedians with heavy accents. Other shows started doing it and now you have to look past a lot of words to watch a show.

  • Yep, that's my dad in law. I managed to get a decent vocabulary. I can recognize a lot of kanji and my kana reading speed is . . . not so quick but passable. My ability to construct sentences is terrible so I'm taking classes for that. Real subtitles are coming soon.

  • Also, Have you figured out why they subtitle everything in their own language? I mean it's helpful for us gaijin... but I don't get it.

  • Boss Hajime Suzuki is your step dad? Cool stuff.

Are you learning the language yet?
