Under frontal impact conditions, an FE model of a Formula 1 nosecone predicts a folding mechanism at the leading tip. This is difficult to determine from actual video footage as composite dust is fragmented and covers the view, however post damage inspection does often reveal some folding process has taken place. This video shows the damage progression in the composite skins using the Ladeveze damage model in PAM-CRASH.

  • Ta, was actually quite cool getting the result out of this one. The force time curve was fairly close to reality given the limits of the composite and honeycomb material models.
