Broken Dream by Charlie Sexton, from the album "Under The Wishing Tree" (AMAZING and incredibly underrated album!)

LYRICS:

I wake up early
I walk around all day
surrounded by people
who are surrounded by hate
misunderstanding everything they're shown
there's a fire burning
but it won't keep me warm

I looked in the night club
and I looked in the street
searching for someone who
was searching like me
I slipped in to the Sanctuary
I stood in the back
I said there's only one question
I was looking to ask

Where are you?
I'm in my broken dream
is it true? they just will not believe
there's no proof
this is the way it should be
somebody's watching
over this broken dream

they say all that glitters
has it's price
in this world of greet,
betrayal and lies
and the grinning false idols
with the glowing red eyes
they have burned down the mission
but the faith never died

(written by Charlie Sexton and Tonio K. - violin by Charlie Sexton)

  • glad you posted this.

Charlie is one of the most unknown musicians in the US, sad to say.

I note you mention he played violin on this cut… I watched Charlie, at 16, sit down at a piano, and within 10 minutes, play well enough to begin composing.

It has been a privilege to be acquainted with him and his brother Will- an equally amazing musician- for the last 28 years.

  • @casacooper I envy you a lot... he's one of those rare musicians whose musical genius always amazes me. Here in Italy he is practically unknown, so I'm glad someone suggested me to buy one of his albums years ago.

  • The Best album ever!Would it be possible to post Plain Bad Luck and Simple Mistakes???

    Great Stuff!:@)

  • @Skyman2901 An user called Giokebox posted Plain Bad Luck and all the other songs from this album. Look for "giokebox sexton" on youtube to see the vids.

  • Plain Bad Luck and Innocent mistakes is the best song. I love the guitar solo at the end. I wish Charlie would unleash that guitar god he has inside. I've been following him since 1986. I've seen him play maybe 15 times. The last time was in 1996 or 1997. I'd sure like to see him again. As a matter of fact I saw him on my 21st birthday and hung out with him after the show in Dallas at a place called Tommy's.

I'm glad to know Charlie is known so widely. You can see a great deal of his guitar work if you watch some of Bob Dylan's newer video's. Charlie has been playing guitar for Dylan for several years now in addition to his own projects.

I'm fairly sure he plays on some of his brother's (Will Sexton) works as well, although I don't know for sure which ones.

I'll look forward to chatting with you from time to time.

    =)

  • @valus08 Thank you for letting me know!Much Appreciated..:@)

  • @thadmaximus1 PBL&IM was written by Tonio K. He also penned All Day and Everyone Will Crawl from that album. For a sample of Tonio K's own stuff, go on YouTube and call up The Executioner's Song.

  • I commented that it would probably be difficult to play the whole of "Plain Bad Luck and Innocent Mistakes" live but I'd like to hear at least a segment, and he said they actually used to play the whole thing live. I live for the day . . .

  • You are so right - this is an amazing album and unfortunately underrated and largely unknown. Since the day I was fortunate enough to find it in a cut-out rack in the mid-'90s, It has been one of my all-time favorite albums. I told Charlie so when I finally met him a few years ago, and he asked how I happened to get hold of it here in NYC and I told him. I told him, and he laughed saying "that's where you'd find it!" He was quite friendly and personable and easy to talk with.
