The Collected Malcolm X: http://malcolmxfiles.blogspot.com/

After winning the championship from Liston in 1964, Cassius Clay revealed that he was a member of the Nation of Islam (often called the Black Muslims at the time) and the Nation gave Clay the name Cassius X, discarding his surname as a symbol of his ancestors' enslavement, as had been done by other Nation members. On Friday, March 6, 1964, Malcolm X took Clay on a guided tour of the UN building (for a second time). Malcolm X announced that Clay would be granted his "X." That same night, Elijah Muhammad recorded a statement over the phone to be played over the radio that Clay would be renamed Muhammad (one who is worthy of praise) Ali (fourth rightly guided caliph). Only a few journalists (most notably Howard Cosell) accepted it at that time. Venerable boxing announcer Don Dunphy addressed the champion by his adopted name, as did British reporters. The adoption of this name symbolized his new identity as a member of the Nation of Islam.

Doesn't make it any less pathetic that you refer to it as a "secret" fight. The Super Fight is well known, and it is also well known that Ali was not KO'd by Marciano, ever. Not during sparring, training or anything.

  • @MrLukeFranks

That is the most pathetic thing I've ever heard. Rocky never knocked out Ali. "The Super Fight" was never anything but a speculation.

  • @MrLukeFranks Lool the fight wasn't real

  • @MrLukeFranks Good luck trying to believe that bullshit

  • Rocky KNOCKED OUT ALI !!! remember that... he was 49 and retired and 40 pounds lighter and 4 inches shorter and still managed to knock Ali out !! They try say it was a staged fight but it was not staged it was a legit fight which Rocky won. Ali is some kind of fraud really. He is a great fighter but not the greatest. Rockiy Marciano IS the greatest !!

  • Rocky Marciano WAS the greatest. He is the ONLY undefeated fighter in histroy. ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST !!!! Ali and Marciano had one secret fight in 1970. Ali was in his prime of 29. Rocky was 49 had been retired for 12 years. Rocky was 5'10 and 190 pounds, Ali was 6'3 and 240 pounds. Marciano KNOWED ALI OUT AND WON THE FIGHT !!!!! This is a fable to say Ali was the greatest. The real greatest was Rocky Marciano who sadly died in a plane crash 3 weeks after knocking Ali out !! suspect I know !

  • What's in a name ? (Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet).

What we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.

  • Perhaps the worst documentary made about Ali. Poor script, chronologically poor, inaccurate and worthless. They couldn't even assemble the still photos correctly.

  • @ah93704 And yet ali was never even close to losing that fight against Chuvalo. Ali won that fight easily, if Chuvalo was a normal man, he wouldve been knocked out in 4 rounds. But Chuvalo is Chuvalo. He was known for his strong chin. Ali was always easy to hit? Are u dumb? And Which heavyweight at that time was more elusive and sharper than Ali?

  • @tigerjonn A lot of ringsider observers felt that Doug Jones defeated Cassius Clay. When Ali was champ the first time he fought George Chuvalo who beat Clay so bad to teh body he was pissing blood for a week. He had to be hosptilized after the fight. Does that sound like an easy fight where Ali was untouchable? NO. Ali was ALWAYS easy to hit. He lacked fundamental boxing skills.
